Build Your Own

So you want to build your own Coglets. Here's how you can do it!

There are THREE basic steps to building a Coglet that you can embed in your website.

  1. Build It! Build a Coghead application with your data
  2. Share It! Create your Coglet to share with your users
  3. Customize It! Customize your Coglet to suit your business needs, your customers, your moods

We'll go through these three steps in detail below.

BUILD Your Coghead Site.

First and foremost, you will of course need to create your Coghead Account. If you haven't done so already, go over to this page and get a free 30-day trial and come back after you're done. Go to the Register Now page.

Now jump into Coghead and begin laying out your app. You can use Coghead's great visual design environment to layout your forms and views exactly as you would like them to appear on your website. Don't forget to customize the fields that show up in your view! Typically the last step is to import your data from Excel (or enter it by hand). Once the database is layed out, and chock full of useful preliminary data (it is a database mind you, so its probably not full yet), then you can create your first Coglet.

For more info on working with Coghead see our well-stocked Support site.

Set Up and SHARE Your Coglet.

Now, time to build your first Coglet. It might help you to know that all you are going to need to do is A) find a website (hopefully you have one handy, as that was the point behind this exercise) and B) be prepared to paste one line of code that will be used to embed the Coglet in your website.

The quickest way to build your Coglet is by using the Coglet Configurator located here (note: be sure to include the HTTPS):

  • Coglet Configurator:
    https://www.coghead.com/coglet/Coghead-Configurator.php?account=<Account>

The Coglet Configuration tool will help you build the embed code you need based on parameters you select. For an explanation of how to use the Coglet Configurator, and to learn everything you ever wanted to know about setting up Coglets please refer to this User Guide.

Enable Access for your Coglet

OK, you created a database, you have a working Coglet, and one last step - setting up users. Refer to the documentation for how to setup limited users.

So there you have it, three steps, one great Coglet!
